About this puzzle

Every birthday party has the same happy ingredients, and this puzzle hides up to 25 of them. There's the cake with its frosting, sprinkles, and candles, the decorations like balloons, streamers, and confetti, and the games and giveaways that make a party, including a pinata, party games, and goody bags. A couple of extras, Birthstone and Noisemaker, give older solvers something less obvious to hunt for.

Set a stack of printed copies on the table for guests to work on while everyone arrives, or tuck one into each goody bag to take home. Teachers can use it to celebrate a student's birthday without adding more sugar to the classroom. Easy and Large print work for young party guests; Medium adds diagonal words, and Hard adds backward ones for older kids.

The 25 words in this puzzle

Every word, with a short note. Handy for teaching the vocabulary before or after solving.

In every version (12)

Balloon
Party balloons are usually made of latex or foil. Helium makes them float because it is much lighter than the air around it.
Candles
Traditionally a cake gets one candle for each year of age. Blowing them all out in one breath is said to make your wish come true.
Card
A birthday card carries a written message for the birthday person. A homemade card with a drawing and a short note is a thoughtful, low-cost gift.
Confetti
Small pieces of colored paper thrown at celebrations. The word is Italian for small sweets, because candy-coated treats were once tossed at carnivals.
Cupcake
Cupcakes are single-serving cakes baked in paper liners. They are easy to share at a class party, and every guest gets their own frosting and sprinkles.
Friends
Friends make a birthday party fun. Playing games, singing together, and saying thank you for coming are all part of being a good host.
Frosting
A sweet, creamy coating spread on cakes and cupcakes. Buttercream, made by beating butter and powdered sugar, is one of the most popular kinds.
Ice Cream
Cake and ice cream are a classic birthday pair. Vanilla and chocolate are two of the most popular ice cream flavors in the United States.
Party Hat
Cone-shaped paper party hats, often held on by an elastic string, are a classic at kids' birthday parties.
Pinata
A decorated container filled with candy and toys that guests take turns hitting until it breaks. The piñata is a beloved part of Mexican celebrations, especially birthdays and Las Posadas.
Presents
Gifts given to the birthday person. Wrapping presents in paper adds to the surprise, since nobody knows what is inside until it is opened.
Wish
Making a silent wish before blowing out the candles is a long-standing tradition. Many people believe saying the wish out loud means it won't come true.

Birthday Cake
Cakes for birthdays go back at least to 18th-century Germany, where children's birthday parties, called Kinderfeste, featured a cake topped with candles.
Goody Bag
A small bag of treats or toys handed to each guest at the end of a party as a thank-you for coming.
Guest
A person invited to a party. A common rule of thumb for young kids' parties is to invite about as many guests as the child's age plus one.
Party Games
Classic party games include musical chairs, freeze dance, and pin the tail on the donkey. Games give guests something to do together between cake and presents.
Ribbon
Ribbon is tied around presents and looped into bows. Pulling curling ribbon along a scissor blade, with an adult's help, makes it spring into tight curls.
Sprinkles
Tiny bits of colored sugar used to decorate cakes and cupcakes. In parts of New England and Pennsylvania, chocolate sprinkles are called jimmies.
Streamers
Long strips of crepe paper hung or twisted across a room as decoration. Twisting two colors together is a quick and cheap way to dress up a party.
Surprise
A surprise party is planned in secret so the guest of honor walks in to a room full of friends. Keeping the secret is the hardest part.

Birthstone
A gemstone linked to each month of birth. For example, January's is garnet, April's is diamond, and September's is sapphire.
Celebrate
To celebrate means to mark a special day with fun and gatherings. People around the world celebrate birthdays in different ways, with songs, special foods, and games.
Gift Wrap
Decorative paper for wrapping presents. Modern gift wrap took off in 1917, when the Hall brothers, who later founded Hallmark, sold decorative envelope linings as wrapping.
Invitation
A card or message asking guests to a party. A good invitation lists the date, time, place, and how to RSVP, from the French répondez s'il vous plaît.
Noisemaker
A party horn or blower that makes a honking sound. The kind that unrolls when you blow into it is sometimes called a party blower or blowout.

A few facts to share while you solve

  • The melody of Happy Birthday to You comes from Good Morning to All, a song published in 1893 by Kentucky sisters Mildred and Patty Hill, who wrote it for young schoolchildren.
  • In a group of just 23 people, there is better than a 50 percent chance that at least two of them share a birthday. Mathematicians call this the birthday problem.
  • The modern American list of birthstones was set in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers, the group now known as Jewelers of America.

Questions and answers

Can I use this birthday word search at a kids' party?

Yes. It works well as an arrival activity while guests trickle in, or as a calm-down game after cake. Print enough copies for everyone and set out pencils or crayons. Kids 6 and up usually handle easy on their own, and younger guests can team up with a parent.

How many words are in the birthday puzzle?

Easy and Large Print use 12 familiar words like Wish and Balloon, Medium uses 20, and Hard uses all 25, adding longer finds like Birthday Cake and Invitation. Two-word phrases such as Party Hat and Goody Bag are hidden with no space between the words.

Why is pinata spelled without the tilde?

In Spanish the word is spelled piñata, with a tilde over the n, and pronounced peen-YAH-tah. Word search grids use only the plain letters A to Z, so the puzzle hides it as PINATA. The pronunciation and meaning stay the same.

Is there an answer key for this birthday word search?

Yes. Choose Print / PDF above the puzzle and keep “Add an answer key page” ticked. The key prints on its own page, with every word highlighted. While playing online, Show answers outlines any words you haven’t found yet.

Can I print copies for my class or group?

Yes. Every puzzle on BetterWordSearch is free to print for personal, classroom, library and homeschool use. Print as many copies as you need. To change the words or make several different versions of the grid, use the word search maker.

What changes between Easy, Medium, Hard and Large print?

Easy hides the 12 most familiar words, reading left to right and top to bottom. Medium uses 20 words and adds diagonals. Hard hides all 25 words in every direction, including backwards, with look-alike filler letters. Large print uses the same words as Easy on a small grid and prints with big letters.
