About this puzzle

Veterans Day, on November 11, thanks everyone who has served in the U.S. armed forces, in wartime or in peace. This list keeps the focus on service and gratitude. It names all six branches, from the Army, founded in 1775, to the Space Force, created in 2019. It also covers the history of the day, including the Armistice that ended the fighting of World War I and President Eisenhower, who gave the holiday its name.

Teachers often pair this Veterans Day word search with a school assembly or a card-writing project for local veterans, and the notes under each word make good talking points for elementary and middle school students. Families can use it to start a conversation with a grandparent or neighbor who served. Thank You is on the list for a reason: it is the simplest way kids can mark the day.

A few facts to share while you solve

  • The official name is Veterans Day, with no apostrophe, because the day is not a day that belongs to veterans but a day for honoring all veterans.
  • Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran from Birmingham, Alabama, organized a National Veterans Day celebration in 1947 and is often called the father of Veterans Day.
  • From 1971 to 1977, Veterans Day was moved to a Monday in October, but in 1978 it returned to November 11 because of the date's historical importance.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

Is this Veterans Day word search appropriate for young kids?

Yes. The words focus on service, respect, and gratitude rather than battles, and the notes stay factual and gentle. Kids around 7 and up can do the easy level, and words like Armistice, Eisenhower, and Patriotism give older students more of a challenge.

How can teachers use this puzzle for Veterans Day?

Use it as a warm-up before an assembly or a card-writing activity for local veterans. After solving, students can pick a branch of the military and read its note, or talk about why the holiday falls on November 11. It also pairs well with inviting a veteran to speak to the class.

Is there an answer key for this veterans day word search?

Yes. Choose Print / PDF above the puzzle and keep “Add an answer key page” ticked. The key prints on its own page, with every word highlighted. While playing online, Show answers outlines any words you haven’t found yet.

Can I print copies for my class or group?

Yes. Every puzzle on BetterWordSearch is free to print for personal, classroom, library and homeschool use. Print as many copies as you need. To change the words or make several different versions of the grid, use the word search maker.
